The Ins and Outs of Bend, Oregon Through a Locals Perspective.

Big Eddy Whitewater Rafting

Big Eddy Whitewater Rafting

What’s up everyone. The weather is hot and the sun is shining again here in Bend, Or. I’ve been working on the river almost every day lately and the river is running big. This means a lot of fun for everyone including me except I get paid to do this. What’s better than a hot sunny day, chillin on the river crushing through the whitewater on the might Deschutes River?

Whitewater rafting is as close as 10 miles outside of Bend off of Century Dr., on your way to Mt. Bachelor just past the Seventh Mtn. Resort. The famous Big Eddy whitewater section of the Upper Deschutes River has been commercially run since the 1970’s.  The guided trip is about 1 1/2 hours long and consists of a 3 mile stretch of river with some class I and II rapids on either side of the main Big Eddy run. With the main Big Eddy run being a 1/4 mile stretch of continuous class II and III+ rapids. This is the perfect trip for the first time rafter or the experienced whitewater enthusiast just looking for some fun on the water on a hot day.

As a raft guide for the Seventh Mtn. Resort for the past seven years, I’ve done this run over 2000 times now and people always ask me if it ever gets boring. Hell no! How could getting paid to have fun, meet new people, and share an experiences be boring? This is awesome! Our job as professional raft guides is to make sure you’re safe and that you have as much fun in a 3 mile stretch of river as possible. Other than the fun whitewater sections you can expect your guide to tell you some bad jokes and play some games which more than likely will end with you in the river. At a balmy 52 degrees the Deschutes River feels great to cool off in when it’s 85+ degrees outside.

You can cruise the river with a couple different companies. The Seventh Mountain Resort is closest to the river, being just 8 miles outside of town on Century Dr. With low prices at $42 for adults, $37 for kids six days-a-week. Don’t forget 2 For Tuesdays are only $21 per person. It’s a 10 minute shuttle from the resort to the river where your guide will be waiting. From there you will embark on your tour of the Upper Deschutes river for the next hour.

So if your looking for some fun in the sun on a hot summer day check out this trip right in our backyard.
